The hot wax inside is a different density than the surrounding liquid, but its density changes as it's exposed to heat, making it rise as it's heated by the bulb at the base, then fall once it cools down at the top of the lamp. It's a hypnotising, scientific marvel that fits comfortably on a side table. The interactions between wax and liquid are not an exact science. Your colouring may differ from the image depicted, and may change throughout use. To keep your lamp smooth and groovy, make sure to always keep it upright, and turn it off regularly, to let it chill out and cool down. If your lamp gets a bit cloudy, don't worry. The wax and liquid have just got themselves a mixed up, and emulsified. This means it's time for some extra chill. Turn off your lamp and let it rest, then heat up again. If it's got super shaken up, you might want to do a few heat cycles to get it back to its smooth and groovy self.
